I Love this City

I don’t know why, but I love London.

My Irish ancestors are probably turning in their graves at my statement, but its true. I don’t know what it is, but there is an energy here that I really enjoy. Maybe after coming from an angry-Muslim country, its because the English seem impossibly polite. As I stood in a mass at the Tube station today, the train stopped and I instinctively started throwing elbows and cursing people’s mothers to get on board first….then I realized that people were saying things like “after you, mate” and there wasn’t a single weapon pulled. This definitely is not Italy. If anyone knows how to make a chaotic queue, its the Italians. 🙂

My hostel is superb, other than the false fire alarm that put me standing outside last night shivering with only a T-shirt on. I have met several friendly travelers, and interestingly the predominant nationalities here seem to be Spanish and Eastern European / Russian. The weather has not really been so bad, and even the sun came out as I accidentally walked up on the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace yesterday. I had no intentions of seeking it out, and was just wandering around, when suddenly I ended up with a front row seat for it. I also saw the tower of London, London bridge, Big Ben, and more random old things that merit only a picture and a checkmark on my map.

I have had zero luck locating any of my friends here. Today, I will take one more attempt to find my Swedish buddy I met in Luxor, and then solo or not, I plan to wander around the pubs here in Piccadilly that are within eyesight of my hostel. With 2 nights left in europe, and vagabonding in 2006 for that matter, I am not going to waste them in the TV room. 🙂

I don’t know why, but despite the incredible expense and historically uncooperative weather, I really enjoy London every time that I come here. Maybe next time I should bring some resumes…? hmmmmmm.
