Mission Failure : The 5 day water fast tries to kill me

The 5 day water fast tries to kill me

I could feel every dimple and imperfection on the blueberry as I rolled it around on my tongue.

It was like eating a blueberry for the first time.  I could even sense its temperature with my mouth.  When I finally got bold enough to chew it, the flavor was surprising. So was the sound when I swallowed and it hit my empty stomach which convulsed in surprise and annoyance that we were starting with fruit rather than saturated fat.

Going just these 2+ days with no food has given me a new appreciation for both eating and the people spattered around the globe that can’t eat.

I am a failure.  After nearly 60 hours of starvation, just barely half way through my planned five day fast, I had to stop.  When I woke up this morning my right kidney was swollen and it felt like someone had stuck me with a sword.  I could barely drag around the house, and to make matters worse - I had a photo shoot. Nothing like trying to get people to smile when you are pastier than Neo and can’t straighten up all the way.

I know, I know. I can hear the “I told you so’s” resonating all over the internet.

5 day water fast

Sunset Ko Lanta - Has nothing to do with 5 way water fast

Sunset Ko Lanta - Has nothing to do with 5 way water fast

5 Day Water Fast

Sitting here, I have just finished 24 hours without a single bite of food.  I fill my stomach directly from a gallon jug of room temperature water which is becoming my best friend….I carry it around everywhere!

Why?

Every now and then I have to throw in the odd personal post to befuddle Google (even more) and to keep this a blog rather than linkbait to grow readers with keywords and “top xx lists”.

One of my simple pleasures in life is hacking.  Thanks to Hollywood, the word “hacker” immediately brings up images of a pizza-faced introvert surrounded by redbull cans, basking in the glow of three giant screens while he desperately tries to “own” city traffic system.

Before you start closing browsers, deleting cookies, and hiding your credit cards - the true definition of the word “hacker” is simply someone who wants to know what makes things work.

“Growing old” is what happens when people loose their natural curiosity in life.

I agree with Aldous Huxley per his book the “Doors of Perception” where he claims we are surrounded by constant stimuli and complex wonders that our brains simply block out because it doesn’t apply to mating, earning money, or survival. The door of perception between our eyes and our brain limits information to keep us sane - and in the process blocks out some interesting stuff.  A hacker just wants to open that door a little more.

Adventure doesn’t always have to include swinging a rusty machete around a jungle - the potential for adventure is everywhere…

Ice and midnight vagabonds

Kentucky ice storm

Kentucky ice storm

Crash! Thump!

Another trunk sized branch laden with ice broke free and hissed through the darkness on its way down.  It sounded like a chandelier hitting the ground as ice exploded like crystal onto the leaves nearby.

Day 3 of an ice storm here in Kentucky and it has taken its toll.  Granted, our “ice storm” would be considered a light dusting in places like Minnesota, but it is still enough to nearly shut down life in Lexington.

The trees aren’t the only things taking a pounding.  Having sat inside for the last few days, my sanity is coming unraveled just like the city’s power grid.  Outside, my truck sits encapsulated in a solid block of impenetrable ice, just daring me to move it.  Just like Martin Sheen in Apocalypse Now, I feel myself growing softer. If I had a mirror I would have leaped up in delirium and punched it by now.

The voices in my head finally peaked in a shrill chorus and in a moment of madness I found myself crunching out into the deserted streets around midnight last night.  Always go where the action is.  Unfortunately at midnight in an iced-over suburbia on foot, that is easier said than done.
