Aftermath
The battle for Chiang Mai has ended.
The only casualties were countless livers and cameras, both destroyed by the non-stop partying in the streets.
All is quiet now, which is very unusual after the last 4 days and nights. I cautiously walked out of my guest house this “morning” (13:00 – no one is up before noon it seems) and waited for the usual bucket of cold water over my head. It never came. There were no more screams coming from the direction of the moat, and businesses that faced the street were actually open again. I could see the sadness in the little Thai kids eyes that I passed, so I knew that Songkhram 2006 was officially done.
After spending every day fighting in the streets and every night dancing to reggae and making amends with the people I attacked during the day, I dont know what to do with myself now. Shop? Eat? bleh.
I am here only 2 more days, then I fly out to Siem Reap in Cambodia. Im looking forward to checking out Angkor Wat of course, but at the same time, I hate to leave this place. Oh well, there’s always next year…..and yes, Im serious, I will probably come back!
