Unrest in Thailand

Bangkok Airport (BKK)

Bangkok Airport (BKK)

In case you hadn’t heard, more civil unrest has popped up in Thailand at the main airport.

I find this very disturbing, first because Thailand is one of my favorite places, and second because I have lots of friends living there or in route there for the holidays.

So far there have been a few small explosions and mixed reports about injuries / deaths. Like usual, they are not targeting farang visitors – this is not terrorism, so travelers are safe but will have some bonus stress while flying. The Thai people love their king, but are basically fed up big time with their prime minister.

I was there during their election and witnessed first hand the controversy, anger, and shouting that came along with the new prime minister. Then I came home and got to go through the same thing again for the US….politics….bleh.

If you have a trip planned, some flights are being diverted to the old airport – World Nomads (the guys I get my travel insurance from) has a great site set up for monitoring travel alerts and are tracking the situation in Thailand.

If you haven’t checked it out yet, the hot new trend on the web is Twitter. If you ever needed to know when some of your favorite people are going to the bathroom, this is the tool for you. I still don’t understand what the hell it does, but I do post frequent updates and snippets on the fly as I hear them from other travelers. Click here to start following my updates.

Thanksgiving at home

My niece and nephew

My niece and nephew

It seems surreal, but I am getting ready to celebrate my first Thanksgiving at home in several years.

For all my international friends, Thanksgiving is the American holiday where you give thanks and remember the pilgrims that first came to America and struggled to start a new life. We do this by eating ourselves into a coma-like state and oozing into a recliner to watch football all day. There we sit, uttering only a few grunts and slobbering noises as the turkey saturates into our blood.

Time looses all meaning as our hearts struggle to pump the gooey substance around our bodies that once was blood. People misinterpret the warm, euphoric feeling as satisfaction, when in reality it is death by turkey poisoning shutting down their body’s vital systems one by one.

Finding cheap airfare – tricks

Getting cheap airfare can be tricky

Ask 20 people on your plane what they paid for their ticket and you will probably get that many different answers.

Unfortunately, booking a bargain flight has become an evil puzzle which I am constantly trying to figure out. I did come across one cool new tool that helps when you are fairly flexible with your plans – as a real vagabond should be! :)

So many times when vagabonding or planning a trip, the price of a flight was more important to me than the actual destination. For instance, if I just wanted to wander Europe, I would be willing to change my port of entry to save a few hundred dollars. It makes little difference to me if I fly into Brussels, Frankfurt, or even London because of cheap budget airline options such as RyanAir that can shuttle me around for cheap or even free sometimes!

Why not save a few bucks flying into a cheaper city and then catching a budget hop to my planned destination? Many people trying budget travel basically just want to get to the continent with the cheapest airfare possible.

Here is a cool way that I have found to do that!
