Out with a bang

Horse jump crash

I guess the horse didn’t get the memo on the jump

And so…with one final, spectacular display of hooves, dirt, pain, and gasps from the crowd - the Kentucky Summer horse show ended and so did my month long gig as a ring photographer.

Over the last month I have easily taken 4000 photos, all of horses jumping over fences at the same timing, angle, etc. I have looked at horses through my viewfinder for so long that I know every vein on their neck, every hair on their faces, and if I had only a few more days here I could probably whisper to them.

I’m not sad to be out of the Kentucky sun in August, but I do hate to see a decent source of travel revenue go. Funny, I’ve been home all year but the feeling of vagabonding still hasn’t left me. I would pack a rucksack every day for this job with water, food, camera, then go off on my own for 10 hours. It felt natural….basically the same thing I’ve been doing for 2 years. Damn I miss the road, but being home and working will just make it that much sweeter some day when vagabonding begins. (again).

Free Flights?

Yes, it sounds too good to be true.

I got an email from Air Asia promoting free flights for next year. Out of curiosity and other than the fact you have to pay the tax for the ticket, it looks legit! The trick is that you have to book now and then travel next year between April and July 2009.

Those dates pretty much put you into the monsoon season for Southeast Asia but it is the perfect time to hit up Bali, Indonesia or China. Not a bad deal for someone planning a vagabonding getaway next year. They even have a little chart showing what freebies are still available.

Check it out:

Burning Man

Today marks the start of the Burning Man festival in Nevada.

If you haven’t read or seen anything about the project, check into it (http://www.burningman.com)…I don’t have the skill, patience, or finger strength to write everything it would take to make someone understand the madness that is Burning Man. Imagine going to one of the driest, most desolate places in the US, a cracked dusty playa in the middle of the Nevada desert and building a huge, temporary eco-friendly city.
